This year marks the 50th anniversary since the annual celebration of Pride began! Celebrated in the summer of June, Pride pays homage to the Stonewall Riots, which were protests for gay rights in the US, (1969). These protests historically changed gay rights and paved the way for many across the world. Pride is all about equality and accepting love in all forms without judgment!

To commemorate 50 years of Pride, we are celebrating global chefs/foodie creators that inspire us! There are SO many iconic figures that we could talk about, but with the help of some of your suggestions, we’ve narrowed down the list to a select few. Let’s dive in…

  1. Jack Monroe

Jack Monroe is a British food writer, journalist and activist known for campaigning against poverty and raising awareness for hunger relief issues. When Jack was 24, she shared the story of how she only had £10 to feed herself and her son. Since then, she has become a bestselling author and shared cheap recipes with the world through multiple cookbooks, including the popular ‘A Girl Called Jack: 100 delicious budget recipes’!

  1. B. Dylan Hollis

TikTok foodie legend, B. Dylan Hollis, is known for having a unique obsession… recreating old-school, vintage recipes from the past! Dylan has over 8 million followers on TikTok and has a ton of viral videos of him cooking up fascinating recipes. This includes a wacky cake (from the great depression era that requires no butter, eggs or milk), avocado ice cream, potato doughnuts and peanut butter bread - just to name a few!

  1. Deborah VanTrece

Discover Atlanta listed Twisted Soul as one of Atlanta's favourite black-owned restaurants! In an interview with The Advocate (an LGBTQ+ news magazine), the owner, Chef Deborah VanTrece, spoke about overcoming the challenges within the food industry being 'black, female and a lesbian'. Deborah also has an acclaimed cookbook and was named 'Chef of the Year' in 2021 by the Atlanta Food & Wine Festival - an incredible achievement!

  1. Dominique Crenn

Dominique Crenn is a globally recognised French chef, who became the first female in the United States to earn 3 Michelin stars for her co-owned restaurant, Atelier Crenn! The first Michelin star was achieved in under a year of the restaurant being open in San Francisco, back in 2011. Adding to this momentous moment, Atelier Crenn is also listed on ‘The World’s 50 Best Restaurants’ at number 48.

  1. Nik Sharma

Nik Sharma is a published food writer, photographer and recipe developer currently based in LA. Nik moved from India to study something very different to the world of food… molecular genetics! Wondering how this change came to be? Nik began writing a food blog ‘A Brown Table’ which led to incredible opportunities and ultimately, his career change. In his powerful interview with the New York Times, he mentions his debut cookbook ‘Season: Big Flavours, Beautiful Food’, which references his story of being a ‘gay immigrant reconciling his past and present’.

Here at Sorted, we believe that whilst it’s so important to celebrate Pride, it’s even MORE vital to support, appreciate and lift up the LGBTQ+ community all year round. Our values are a life-long commitment that we stand by with all of our hearts!
